Which ETF Performed Better?

Most investors compare ETFs by asking:
Which delivered the highest return?
Which has the lowest expense ratio?
Which performed better over five years?
These questions matter—but they are not enough.
A better review should also ask:
Who legally owns the ETF?What is its true total cost? How is the income taxed? Can my family access it if something happens to me?
Two ETFs tracking the same market may deliver similar published returns but create very different outcomes due to:
Dividend withholding tax
ETF and platform charges
Fund domicile
Legal ownership structure
Estate-tax exposure
Succession procedures
An ETF may be held directly, through a custodian, an investment platform or an offshore wrapper. Each structure can affect cost, control and how easily beneficiaries can access the investment.
The ETF’s expense ratio is also only one part of the cost. Investors should consider platform fees, adviser charges, custody costs, trading commissions, currency spreads and exit charges.
Most importantly, a portfolio is not fully planned just because it has grown well. It should also be structured so that the investor’s family can identify and access the assets without unnecessary legal, tax or administrative complications.
So, don’t ask only:
“Which ETF performed better?”
Also ask:
“Who owns it, what does it truly cost, and can my family access it?”
Sometimes, those questions matter more than a small difference in historical performance.
