Is This a Good Investment? Start With the Person Behind the Money

“Is this a good investment?”
A useful follow-up is: “Good for whom—and for what purpose?”
The same fund, ETF or savings plan can suit one person and be unsuitable for another. Its suitability depends on how it fits your life.
Imagine two people investing USD 50,000. One needs it for a child’s university fees next year. The other is saving for retirement in 20 years.
The first needs to prioritise protecting the money and accessing it on time. The second may have more room to accept market fluctuations, depending on their circumstances.
Same amount. Different needs. Different investment decisions.
Five Questions Before Investing
What is the goal? Define what the money must achieve and how much you will need.
When will you need it? A longer timeframe may allow more room for market fluctuations, but it does not eliminate risk.
How much access do you need? Consider emergencies, planned withdrawals, exit charges and restrictions.
How does it fit with your other assets? Check whether it adds diversification or increases exposure you already have. The currency of future expenses matters too.
Can you afford—and tolerate—a fall? Your financial ability to absorb a loss and your emotional comfort with it are different. Both matter.
Look Beyond Returns
Past performance cannot tell you whether an investment is suitable for you or what it will deliver next. Costs, risks and withdrawal terms also deserve attention.
Start by asking: “What job does this money need to do in my life?”
Suitability comes from understanding the person behind the money.
